Menopausal Mother was voted by others around the world to be 2014’s funniest mom blogger in the world! Check out how her blog has become so popular in just a short time!
What made you think about starting a blog?
I started a blog because I’ve always enjoyed writing and needed an outlet to express myself. Both my father and sister encouraged me to write and supported every effort I made. After they both passed away a few years ago, I made a promise to them that I would do something with my writing. They’re one of the main reason I started my Menopausal Mother blog.
What social media platform do you think people respond to your humor best?
My favorite social media to use is Facebook. I have the largest amount of followers on my fan page and I get the best responses there. I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of Twitter. It’s a little too restrictive for me.
Which of your posts is your personal favorite? Why?
There’s a tie between my favorite blog posts. As for humor, my favorite is one titled, “Meet My Son, The Cat With Nine Lives” because I am living with a very unique teenager who provides quite a bit of fodder for my blog posts. The essay digs deep into the psyche of a parent and gives you a glimpse into the dynamics of the mother and son relationship. My son drives me bonkers, but I wouldn’t change him for anything in the world.
The other blog post that is near and dear to my heart is actually a serious one I wrote about grief and the loss of my sister. It’s titled, “Soaring With Eagles.” It’s still difficult for me to discuss or even read the post, but I think it is some of my best writing to date, even though it’s not humor.
What tip can you give us about writing with wit?
The best tip for writing humor is to READ humor! I grew up reading Erma Bombeck and more recently, Dave Barry. The majority of blog posts I subscribe to are also humorous ones. They inspire me to write better and to keep the funny stuff fresh.
What is the funniest quote you’ve ever heard?
This is impossible for me to answer. I read hundreds of funny quotes a week! I’ll tell you what usually gets me laughing in the morning—-I love all the funny Facebooks memes floating around. This week’s favorite is: “I found $80 in my jean’s pocket. The kid in me says, ‘Buy Nerf gun and candy.’ But the adult in me says, ‘Buy vodka, Nerf gun and candy!'”
Are you inspired by comedians? If so, who?
I love Ellen DeGeneres (who doesn’t?) and of course Jim Carrey, but my all-time favorite comedian is Robin Williams. He is the whole package—funny jokes, crazy facial expressions and he does GREAT imitations. Truly a genius of comedy.
Please make us laugh with your own funny quote
This is a tough one for me, because there are so many funny things said around my house on a daily basis, it’s too hard to pick just one thing that stands out. Unfortunately, some of my favorite quotes cannot be repeated here, so I’ll go with another one of my favorites: “Get smashed, do something stupid and make memories. Just don’t get arrested while you’re at it.” *This pretty much sums up the nuthouse I live in.
