Do you depend on coffee to wake you up every day? Are you unable to think or function normally without it? Have you ever tried to go without?

CoffeeHeartBy 2PM every day, I am already on my 4th strong cup of coffee.  Years ago, my husband bought this beautiful, Swiss machine that, according to its recorded digits, has already made 20,000 cups of coffee for us. It makes the most aromatic and wonderful tasting coffee ever. It’s like having our own little coffee joint right in our house!

Now I can’t stay off of it no matter how much I try.  I’ve “detoxed” and laid off of it for a week once, felt completely ill and riddled with headaches, but felt great afterwards. Then of course my inability to control myself kicked in really hard and I couldn’t help but have a cup. The next day, I said I would only have one. The day after that, I made an excuse to have just one more that day and I would stop the next. Never happened.

My husband, who’s English, loves caffeine. Whether it’s coke, black tea, or really strong coffee, he must definitely have it. He said he’s been this way since he was a child old enough to drink tea with his mum.

About 6 months ago, I saw the horrible effects that going cold turkey on caffeine can do to a person. My husband had the stomach flu. His stomach was unable to tolerate anything at all, not even water. After 3 days of being ill, he was still in bed, but this time he spent a lot of time staring into space. He was in denial of it, but I know that it’s because he hasn’t had any caffeine in his system after being dependent on it for almost 40 years.

I drink coffee, because I stay up until 1 or 2 am to work on my projects and wake up whenever my son feels like it’s time to get up. This usually means I get a good 5 hours of sleep on a daily basis. So I do rely on something to keep me awake.

Because I drink so much coffee, I can still fall asleep after having a nice cup. However, it has a funny way of keeping me sane and helping me get through the day. I found an awesome post that might explain the reasons why I can function better with coffee than without.

How much coffee do YOU drink and how often have you tried to lay off of it?
