Confirm Your Suspicions With A Home Pregnancy Test

If you are like most women, you would like to know right away if your are pregnant.  Taking a home pregnancy test is the easiest way for you to confirm if you are pregnant or not.  Pregnancy tests aren’t foolproof but not all pregnancy tests are created equal.  A pregnancy test detects whether or not there is a hormone present in your urine that is only produced during pregnancy called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).  If the test detects the hormone in your urine the pregnancy test turns positive unless the amount of hormone in your urine is less than the test is able to detect.  The amount of hormone required for a pregnancy test to turn positive varies depending on the brand and type of pregnancy test that you are using.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy Tests by freedigitalphotosThe best time to take a pregnancy test is early in the morning and this is the time of day when you will receive the most accurate results.  First morning urine contains more concentrated levels of hCG, making it easier for the test to determine your results.  Before taking the pregnancy test, make sure that the test is unopened and hasn’t been tampered with.  Next check the box or the package to ensure that the test you are about to take has not already expired.  Read the instructions to determine the best way to use the test.

Some tests require you to pee in a cup while others have you pee directly on the stick.  If you aren’t comfortable peeing directly on the stick, you can use a disposable cup to urinate in.  Make sure that the cup is clean.    Wait at least 3 minutes before reading the test results; however, if you walk off while the test is registering it is important that you read it within the first 10 minutes for accurate results.  Most tests are considered inaccurate after 10 minutes, so it is very important that you read the test before the time has elapsed.

My Home Pregnancy Test Result Was Negative, Now What?

If you get a negative pregnancy test and you still suspect that you could possibly be pregnant, it is safe to assume that it was to early to detect hCG in your urine or that you aren’t pregnant.  However, if you feel that the test was incorrect then wait a few days and retest again using first morning urine.  If you still have a negative pregnancy test and you are extremely late, schedule an appointment with your doctor to have a blood test drawn and to rule out other potential causes for a missed period.

My Home Pregnancy Test Result Was Positive, Now What?

If your home pregnancy test is positive, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor or ob/gyn doctor so that they can confirm that you are pregnant.  Most doctors will confirm your pregnancy using a urine test and a blood test.  It will take about a day to get the results back from your blood test and you should hear from your doctor’s office the next day with your results.
