7 Helpful Toys to Encourage Your Kids to Exercise

With Summer quickly approaching, I, like most parents, worry that my kids will want to spend too much time indoors with their faces glued to their various screens. As someone who prioritizes family fitness, I’m determined to encourage and motivate my children to spend more time outside. I’ve decided to hunt down fun toys that will entice them to play, move around, and exercise outdoors during their months off from school.

Here are a few of your choices:

  1. Bikes, trikes, and scooters
  2. Nothing lures kids outside faster than a set of wheels. There is an astonishing array of scooters, trikes, bikes and even kiddie cars to suit your little humans regardless of their age. Not only do these ride-on toys provide hours of fun, they’re also an excellent way for your kids to learn steering, balancing, and coordination.

  3. Trampolines
  4. If you are a huge fan of outdoor trampolines and are concerned about their safety risk, go for mini-trampolines. These smaller variations are best suited for younger kids. Best of all, they come equipped with easy-grip handles so your child can bounce away to their heart’s content without hurtling to the ground. Once playtime is over, you can easily tuck them away for another day.

It’s always recommended, of course to keep small children from jumping in with the big kids. The last thing you’d want is a 100lb human landing on a very tiny, 25 lb tike!

  5. Blaster toys
  6. There’s a wide assortment of blaster toys for your kid to explore including Nerf guns, bows, and crossbows all with different features, performance ratings, and ammo (plastic or foam darts, exploding ammo, etc.) Organize your brood into teams and have a fun-filled family day blasting away at each other. Just take care to supervise and lay ground rules to avoid injuries.

  7. Frisbees
  8. Give your kids frisbees and rest assured that they’ll get enough exercise running around practicing how to throw and catch. Add a pet to the mix and the whole family is guaranteed to have hours of fun. To up the ante, you can buy a bouncing frisbee or an Ogodisk. The latter is versatile enough to be used as a frisbee or as a hand-trampoline to catch and throw balls. It can even be used in a swimming pool.

  9. Water balloons
  10. Outdoor fun doesn’t come any simpler than water balloons. This is the go-to toy if you are looking for an entertaining way to cool off when the weather gets warmer. Join your kids in a water balloon war and see who will be crowned champion.

  11. Sports and/or game sets
  12. Teaching your kids a sport is a great way to build their confidence and self-esteem. You don’t even have to enroll them in an organized sports team. Simply buy one of the numerous games or sports sets in the market, set them up in your backyard and let your kids have a go at them.

Here are a few examples you might want to consider:

  13. Jump ropes
  14. An oldie but goldie toy for kids, the jump rope never disappoints. Nowadays your kids will be spoilt for choice whether they are novice jump ropers starting out or experienced ones practicing new tricks and styles. Buy ropes that are long enough and the whole family can also get in on the fun.

  • This is great! Starting to get into the habit of regular exercise is very important from a young age – thank you for this.

  • Such a great thing to think about! Kids are so sedentary with all of the devices and such. Getting exercise is a must! 🙂

  • Great ideas! sure thing kids will love this gadgets and will encourage them to do some exercise without noticing it. All moms and dad out there here’s a great tip for you guys.

  • Is there a better investment than a trampoline? I don’t think so, it is so much fun and really promotes exercise too. You gave some really great advice in this post.

  • That’s an interesting list. I am thinking of Water Balloons and Trampoline for my favorite niece this summer. What better way than getting cool with water balloons and then jumping on trampoline! Thanks for these great tips.

  • Cool list! I always wanted a trampoline when I was a little but never gotten one at all. Most of the toys are great for kids and it need has to do with a lot of running and jumping. Great for kids workout and boost their immune system and brain power.

  • Great post! While my children had all of the above my grandchildren do also now. The difference is there are many different kinds of each item. They all seem to get their exercise on with different toys. Also family day or night at the YMCA is also wonderful.

  • We are planning on getting the kids a trampoline at the start of summer! After they used our friends for the first time a couple weeks ago they fell in love with it. I love that they all can do it and spend time together!
