I sat and watched at a restaurant as a woman and her daughter, who looked about 7, order their waitress around as if she was a dog or slave. It wasn’t just the tone and words she lashed as she disapproved of her cold soup and her longer than usual wait time, which didn’t seem all that long to me, but the body language, eye rolls and the loud sighs were just outright rude.
It was appalling to see that this woman was not just outright rude, but was teaching her child to be the same by allowing her to act horribly to the waitress. It really was a “like mother like daughter” situation.
The waitress did everything she could to remedy the situation, while still managing to be courteous and sweet, regardless of the rude behavior that kept getting thrown at her. Then the main course was served and the meat was not as perfectly medium as ordered. The waitress took the plate from her table without saying a word and then came back a few minutes later with a nice, new plate of finely cooked steak.
Through everything the waitress had to endure, there was not one thank you or apology for anything at all. Once they left, I could tell something was even more wrong. Her face turned red and then some very noticeable tears suddenly appeared. It looked as if she was left 2 quarters on the table as a tip.
Positivity Through a Random Act of Kindness
I was horrified and was about to stand up when an older gentleman beat me to it. He walked over to her and handed her something (looked like money). He whispered something to her and she immediately gave him a hug as her cry got even more intense. I heard her say, “thank you so much. For a moment, I thought this was the worst day I’d ever had with the worst people I’d ever met.”
When the next group of people came to sit down, she greeted them with a smile and a nice new attitude. It was as if that entirely bad situation didn’t even happen!
The random act of kindness by the gentleman not only surprised her, but gave her a sense of comfort to know that love, kindness and compassion is never impossible in the midst of chaos. The good gesture by the gentleman was passed on from the waitress to the next customers who then smiled and seemed to have had a pleasant dining experience.
Surely if the gentleman had not shown kindness to this woman, her attitude could have potentially created a negative effect, not just with her customers, but her colleagues and others around her. Goes to show you just how much a difference a random act of gratitude and kindness can do.
