Momlife Is a Great Life When Kids Are Back at School!

It’s the first day of school and I really can’t tell who’s more excited, me or the little guy. I know he was a little anxious this morning, because he didn’t know what to expect, but we all get anxious, even as adults. The first week is usually tough when you’re at a new place, but people tend to get through it real quick.

back to school

I have been a work-at-home mom since my son was born 7 years ago and today will be the first official day I get to sit at home and have 7 hours of uninterrupted work time. I was seriously jumping up and down like I just had a shot of tequila!

If you’re a parent, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s those times when you know you’ll finally be able to eat an entire meal without having to help another person out. I can also choose to sit and just watch TV while I slouch on the couch if I wanted to. Most importantly, I can think more clearly and probably be much more efficient with work since I don’t have to think about getting up for anybody for the next few hours.

Now I can …

Oh … the peace and quiet! I don’t even have to spend money on a sitter or worry about someone else watching him! The child care service is absolutely FREE!

If you’ve never had kids, you might read this and think … “WOW! She should never have had a kid.” Nah, I love my kid more than my right arm. In fact, I once thought my husband was the love of my life, but it was stupid and naive to think I even knew what love was until my little guy entered my life. Now I know what true love really is.

Still, just because you love your kid(s), it doesn’t mean you don’t love silence either. It’s the one true priceless gift you could have when you’re a parent.

Summer with kids home all day, every day can be tiring for parents. The noise is least of my concerns. It’s keeping him entertained long enough to keep him from saying, “I’m bored” and not feel guilty about it. I mean, sure he’s got toys and things he can do, but obviously it requires me having to go do those “other” things with him. By the time we were done with these other activities, I was wiped and too tired to think about doing anything else. Hence, the more extreme lack of sleep!

Being back at school means having to think of unique lunch and snacks to prepare and of course the homework! Luckily for us, we have an entire week to return them.

Now do you get why parents LOVE the school year? So I congratulate you and wish you good times if your child has just entered into the “big kids” school! Happy First Day of School!

  • Your essay is particularly good.I am also very happy when my children back at school. That is freedom.Sometimes we can get some friends for a barbecue.
I’ve written about barbecue grills, and if you’re interested, you can read and give advice

  • I’m still in the between coz’ the preschooler still cries at drop offs. So it’s a lot of anxiety for me. Then there’s also the “making lunch pack” every day that I dread. But I think once the Lil one is in kinder, I’ll like school more than summer as I get to actually work more. Have fun!

  • It’s kind of a balance with me about love. Since being divorced, the time with my daughter has dropped in so many ways, even if the quality of the time I have with her has improved markedly. I do think back to school is good for my daughter and life, but I do miss the opportunity to spend more time with her while she is free. And I know her free time will get less and less as time goes on. That is sad.

  • My youngest daughter started school this week and I was so relieved to have some quiet time at home without the two of them shrieking at me and making demands all day long! I know exactly what you mean! Perhaps now I can finish those manuscripts I have been working on for the past 5 years… 😉

  • It sounds like you are enjoying your day. All 3 of my kids are out of school, well except my youngest goes to college away from home. Still, every year when school starts my stomach gets all uptight. I never liked that my kids had to go to school but I didn’t feel like homeschooling was for me. I always loved vacation time even though we didn’t go anywhere lol.

Enjoy the start of the school year! and your quiet.

  • haha, I can only imagine the freedom! There’s this Staples commercial, where the dad is shopping for back to school supplies and “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” playing. Love it!

  • I’ve seen friends who are moms who are happy that the kids are back to school. It gives them so much more time to do stuff that needs to be done at home. It’s not about the parents not wanting to be with their kids, but they definitely need that time alone too.

  • Hahaha “work hard, nap hard” that is the motto! I graduated college in May so I won’t be feeling the back to school vibes until I have my own kiddos…in the distant distant future.
